Poems From Readers : The Message – Nuel

The message is an inspirational poem from one of our guest readers, Nuel. With six stanzas, it’s rhythmic and thought provoking lines cut through pertinent societal issues like racism and police brutality. This poem about life asks the hard questions that we try to ignore. It literally speaks to our conscience and humanity. The Message ends on a more cheerful note; with a message of hope and the sanctity of human life irrespective of race.

Enjoy this wonderful piece

The Message
Go, I am sending you on a thankless errand
Deliver this, to the best
For it will forever be relevant
The truth shall be your warrant
For you are conscience, the body’s guest.

Say to the rulers, they said
There is no more apartheid
Yet our cold bodies are swept away by the tide of our tears
Our young ones know all about hate
Even before they are eight.
Ask them; Don’t we matter?

Say to the men in uniforms
They took an oath to protect us all
Not to make and see us fall
They took an oath to keep us from harm
Not to open on us; their arsenal of fire arms
Ask them; Don’t we matter?

Say to our neighbors
He created us all on the same day
Should we then be judged by the color of our skin?
And not the intent of our hearts?
Ask them tearfully; Don’t we matter?

Say to our young ones,
Be strong!
Your tomorrow won’t be like this
There is hope!
Tell them courageously; There is hope!

Then go into the world
Speak to their body’s guest
There will be stabbing
But don’t stop blabbing
Until they all say
All lives matter, just like black lives matter
